Wow! Where has the summer gone. We had a short unplanned outage last evening from about 10:15-10:30pm due to some network issues on our border firewall during an upgrade of some server gear. Service came back up just fine after a restart but we're replacing that piece of hardware just in case.
Some highlights since July:

Looks like the Authorize.NET datacenter had a fire - so users processing payments via their gateway will be down until service is restored. More info at techcrunch.com.

Happy Canada Day! We've just launched another lifetouch site for our good friends to the north. Check out http://www.lifetouch.ca. Our CMS system has seen some major updates with this project to accomodate some cool photo gallery features.

Good times today at the Hut. We're proud to be the recipients of the Guadalupe Award for volunteer service at San Miguel Middle school in Minneapolis. Check them out at www.sanmiguel-mpls.org. The National Association of Realtors just added a carbon calculator on greenresourcecouncil.org using the system we developed for Eco Hatchery. Lots of jQuery ajax goodness.

Walsh Design hat trick! The third site for Walsh Design Group just went live today - great artwork from Velvet Peel. Full service interior design plus 2 retail outlets - I don't know how they do it! The portfolio and product displays on the site use some nice modified jQuery carousel items and an integrated javascript calendar.

Pentair Hospitality has just launched their new site with some spiffy flash modal doodads on their homepage. There was a last minute scramble to incorporate a search component unto this static site and we ended up using sphider - super quick and easy to get rolling.

Web-Don Inc. just launched an updated site using our content management tool and a new design from Synchronicity Web Designs. The Center for Victims of Torture has also updated their site engine - they've been using our content management tool since 2002. With the new engine, they'll be able to easily reskin the site when they're ready without any loosing any content.

Work has also started on the third major revision of the CMS tool. We'll be incorporating a lot of usability improvements and keeping up with the Web2.0 trends by updating a lot of the control features to utilize the jQuery UI libraries.

A few new sites launched with some fun added functionity.
  • www.roundhearth.com is live with an online event registration system. The Round Hearth at Stowe runs various programs throughout the year and their registration process for each is pretty different. We came up with a flexible system for them to collect online registrations with a good mix of content management for the pieces they'll change often and custom coded forms for the pieces that only change annually.
  • www.lifetouchseniorportraits.com is up and running with a search tool to allow students to look up their school portrait day with some cool jquery/php lookup tools and an easy database updating tool.
  • www.premiere-inc.com is using our cms tool to showcase their services.

We've added some great features to our backup server! We now support CrashPlan PRO from Code42. It's similar in functionality to our current BoxBackup system with a nicer user interface and a few extra wistles and bells. Crashplan provides a cross-platform backup system which will store your information both on a local USB drive and on our servers for offsite redundancy. All data is encrypted on at your office - so the system is HIPPA compliant. Best of all it just does what you expect - back up your stuff. To get started just download the client software for your platform and give us a call.

Werc Werk Works just launched their new site with press releases and information on their projects designed by Tilka Design. It incorporates a media component that allows them to pack a lot of image and video content into a nice small package. There are also a few layout features on the site that stretched our jQuery skills to nice effect.

Walsh Design has launched the first of 3 sites showcasing their design services and retail locations. They have an extensive portfolio and lots of press pieces, so we built a system for managing all of that info and plugged it into some really nice designs from Velvet Peel.

January 26, 2009 Team Church has rolled out a new site with some nice video player templates. We're working on integrating some google calendar items on their contact pages for easy, centralized management.

Phishing attempt
We are getting reports of emails attempting to get customers to send user names and passwords. Just to let you know, we won't ask for that information (as we have your account information), but the bad guys don't, so please delete / ignore the attempts to get you to send off any of your user name or password information.

January 1, 2009 New Years Resolution - start putting things on the news page!
Looks like an overly long time since we posted anything new. There are a lot of changes coming in the tech world and we're having fun learning and playing with some new toys. Here's a quick list of new (or newish to us) tech we've been playing with.
  • Netbooks like the Asus EEEpc and the Acer Aspire are great tools for mobile access. Lugging around a laptop is good if you travel for work and need to crank out documents and such when on the road, but if you use your machine as a reference tool (or a network tool like we do) having something small and durable is great. Web access is more and more the only thing you need to keep up with your work and clients and a netbook is the perfect tool for it.
  • We have an iPhone and G1 in the office - both are pretty nice. Kelly and I will have to have a functionality showdown one of these days and see which comes out on top. Both have decent web browsers and email and enough utilities available for us to troubleshoot server issues from anywhere.
  • Zimbra is my pick for favorite groupware platform. We can run it on a Linux server, it syncs nicely with Mac and PC software as well as supporting all of the mobile devices out there.
  • It seems like everyone is getting on the social app bandwagon. Twitter and Tumblr are my favorites so far with Facebook a close third just because so many people are using it. I'm working on hooking our network monitoring system into twitter to broadcase system notices to whoever is interested. Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody is a great read to give some insights into the changes happening with the kinds of communication that the Internet provides.
